5 Stars!

When I picked up One with My Lord, I didn’t expect such profound truths packed into such an approachable book. Sam Allberry brings theological depth with a warm, relatable tone that makes this devotional both accessible and transformative. His reflections on being “in Christ” are powerfully informative and equally inspiring.

This is my first time reading Allberry’s work, and I’m impressed by his ability to weave practical insight with rich biblical exposition. He dives deeply into what it means to belong to Christ, reminding us that our union with Him is the heartbeat of our faith.

Allberry paints a vivid picture of what it means to be “in Christ.” It’s not a side note or optional part of the Christian life—it’s central. He writes, “Being in Christ is not incidental; it defines who we are as believers.” That’s a perspective shift that has the power to anchor our identity in unshakable truth.

This book reminded me that true spiritual flourishing isn’t about striving on my own but abiding in Christ. “We can’t expect to flourish spiritually if we’re apart from Him,” Allberry explains. Those words challenged me to examine whether I’m truly drawing life and strength from my union with Him or trying to go it alone.

One of the most impactful ideas in the book is how holiness isn’t just a list of behaviors but the natural outflow of being in Christ. “If I am who I am in Christ, then it is holiness—not sinfulness—that is now who I most truly am in the deepest core of my being.” That’s the kind of truth that reorients how I see myself and my struggles.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, unsure of how to grow in your faith, or disconnected from your identity in Christ, One with My Lord will meet you right where you are. It’s an excellent resource for personal devotions, small group discussions, or even as a guide to deeper discipleship.

Allberry’s ability to make weighty truths accessible is remarkable. This book is one to savor and reflect on. My highlighter didn’t stand a chance. Whether you’re new to this doctrine or need a reminder of its richness, this book is a gem.

Just a few of my highlighted quotes:

• “Being in Christ is the topic of this book because it is the heartbeat of the Christian faith.”

• “The heart of the Christian life is Jesus Himself. The only true life we can experience is drawn from Him.”

• “Knowing who we really are through our union with Christ makes all the difference.”

Highly recommend.
